Another Gaze: a journal of film and feminisms is seeking submissions for its sixth print issue, to be released at the end of the year. Another Gaze is a printed and online open-access journal, founded with the intention that it be a sustained and evolving forum for discussion around women and the moving image. Our first five issues – distributed in bookshops, cinematheques and university libraries worldwide – contain essays, reviews, fragments and interviews on narrative, documentary and experimental work.

We are open to all forms of writing from all kinds of writers. The writing we publish is thorough and research-based, but not academic in form. For our sixth issue, we are particularly interested in writing about the moving image that breaks the standard formula of the ‘essay’ or ‘review’. We are interested in distinctive critical writing that carves out a space for itself at a time when readers are drowning in a veritable sea of content: writing that is, for want of better words, experimental, radical, and daring. We are less interested in writing that discusses representational issues along the lines of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ imagery, and more interested in the politics of form. Our understanding of “feminisms” is critical, pluralist and ever-evolving. We are seeking writing about women as filmmakers, spectators and filmic subjects, as well as that which considers other forms of structural oppression (socio-economic, racialised, sexuality-based…). As our printed journal is published irregularly, we invite writing that doesn’t have an expiry date (reviews of the latest ‘big’ releases, for example).

We are a small non-for-profit journal. We are able to offer 150-250GBP per piece, according to word count. We offer a thorough and involved editorial process. Please send a concise pitch (max 300 word) with ‘AG06’ in the subject heading, along with two previous writing samples (PDF or Word document) to editorial at another gaze dot com by midnight BST, July 24th. We will be commissioning on a rolling basis up until the deadline.
