Pitches wanted (sports) | ~50+ cents per word

Aaron Cline Hanbury, Editor at Common Good, is looking for pitches:
In the next few months (think around autumn), we're going to start publishing about sports. And I'm looking for some uber smart writers and ideas to help us get going. I think we've mentioned this one before, but we're getting closer to going live.
Writer(s). I'm looking for a writer or two or three who is/are *really* into sports and sports-related issues. I'm not talking about casual fans here. I'm talking about deep-dive sports people. Like Moneyball people. Like writers who want to dig into salary cap issues. Reporters who already have an idea why the fast-stirring cocktail of digital media, business, and basketball may make NBA ownership too complex for even the founder of Nike. And to be clear, for now, I'm looking for freelance/contract writing. If this is you or someone you know, please reach out to me.
Pitches. For individual pieces, what does that look like? Think like the Ringer, except looking at sports alongside culture and society broadly and not just alongside pop culture. Think like Grantland in the Bill Simmons days. IYKYK. Examples of the kinds of things I want to explore are:
- the ethical debacles of Ja Morant and Deshaun Watson and player gambling even while the major sports leagues they represent heavy-handedly signal moral voices;
- the growth (and cons!) of year-round specialization within kids' and youth sports;
- the non-sports economic influence of football (see: the city-making potential of a high-profile NFL qb and the university fundraising that follows successful NCAA football programs);
- the history and theology of play and recreation;
- etc.
And of course, welcome to all of you new subscribers. Let me just say:
- The only real way to experience Common Good is in paper and ink. Think about subscribing.
- You can sign up for Common Good's monthly email. It's free.
- Don't forget Twitter and IG (We're bad at social, so keep your expectations low.)
- I've got a newsletter about writing and reading, more or less, if you're interested. Also free.
- Sarah, wisely, exists online only mildly.
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that Common Good pays 50+ cents per word. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.
