Deadline: 30 June 2023
J. Khadijah Abdurahman, Editor in Chief of Logic(s) Magazine, is looking for pitches:
So the good news is that I am not the sole editor of logic(s) and you can still pitch us or request a free copy of the magazine by emailing: editors at logics dot io while I am on the mend. Instructions for both:
1) Requests for a free copy require no proof of anything just email and be clear that’s what you’re asking for. If you’re rich, please pay but otherwise there’s no bureaucracy just ask and you shall receive.
2) Please pitch by emailing: editors at logicmag dot io. We’re prioritizing tech policy for feature length essays but will accept any pitches broadly related to our mission for all other genres (shorter essays, fiction, visual art, book reviews, etc.).
Sharing a pitch template. Please send by June 30 for this issue. This is primarily geared towards text-based essay submissions.
PITCH TEMPLATE
The most important thing to keep in mind when pitching/the biggest pitfall people make is not being concrete; sharing an idea instead of a story. we want to know: who, what, when, why how, where.
- Tell us what you want to write about. describe the technology, idea, process, story, etc. at the center of your piece. The more concrete specificity the better.
- Tell us why that thing matters. what are the stakes of the piece? Also, “who are you? whose your people? Where they from and what you want here?” Meaning, not necessarily your professional affiliations (although that’s ok too) but who are you in relation to this story you’re pitching?
- Tell us what this piece is going to contribute to the understanding of the thing you're writing about and how it could change the stakes. What work will this piece do in the world?
GENERAL NOTES:
- Almost all of our work is available free online at http://logicmag.io/#issues. it's good to take a look at the things we've published before to get a feel for the sorts of pieces we do and how we approach them. The Beacons issue was the template for our relaunch as Logic(s) and supa dupa skies: move slow and heal things can also give you a sense of how the scope of the magazine has grown and changed.
- We're a magazine about technology broadly construed, with a focus on Black x Asian x Queer life. It's often good to make some kind of technology or technological process – and the relationships that revolve around it – the focus of your pitch.
- Often, our best pieces examine a technology in detail and show how distinct social, political, economic and other relations produce, emerge from or are otherwise changed by the specifics of the technology.
- All pitches have to have some tech angle but we interpret that very capaciously. Strongly urge you to review supa dupa skies: move slow and heal things, to get a sense of the range.
TLDR: We love queer + trans stories. We love non-Americans writing about non-America. We are super black, so speak to us, don’t try to educate hypothetical white people or “the international community.” We will figure out how to pay you no matter where you are or citizenship.
If you work with incarcerated people (prisons, methadone clinics, mommy and baby programs ran by family cops, etc.), we will publish them! i.e., in this issue: Lost in Transit: Digitization of Mail Expands Surveillance Beyond Prisons by Phillip Vance Smith, II: https://logicmag.io/supa-dupa-skies/
Final note, is I am very opinionated and perhaps idiosyncratic but we have a range of editors with a range of creative and political investments. This not the Khadijah show, pitches need not align with me.
