Deadline: 11 July 2023
Anto Cerrato, Editor at Sidequest, is looking for pitches:
Welcome to the July Pitch Call for SIDEQUEST magazine.
We received a lot of excellent submissions last month, which has filled out the content calendar for 2023 really nicely and has been really helpful to me in planning out the content for year 3 of the 'zine.
For this month's newsletter, we're going to take a slightly different approach to normal. Instead of asking for broad categories of pitches, I've got some very specific content gaps to fill. These are categorized below by the issue of the magazine they will appear in.
A note on the setting of Istar: In year 3 of SIDEQUEST we are putting a greater emphasis on developing our campaign setting of Istar, which has had some content produced for it over the course of the last 2 years of the 'zine. The intention is that every article will include at least some context about this world and setting. In the future, I'd like to provide a setting bible for writers to reference, but in the meantime each article will likely have multiple writers working on different elements, and when working on content specific to the setting it may require a little more back and forth with the primary writer to make sure everything about an article is clearly communicated.
Onto the pitch call!
ISSUE 26
Do NOT Pitch ME
- Monsters
- Magic Items
- Fantastic Locations
- Please Pitch Me
- The Formless: A new race/ancestry to represent the Akmeri in our setting, who are creatures of pure energy without bodies following a cataclysm. For this we're looking for interesting mechanical ideas around a playable race that has no physical body but is not a ghost. This article will likely feature multiple writers and levels of revision to fit the content into our setting of Istar, as the Akmeri and their formless nature are key parts of the setting.
ISSUE 27
Do NOT Pitch ME
- Monsters
- Please Pitch Me
- Magic Items: Particularly those with a focus on Aberrations or dreams/nightmares. Please pitch in sets of at least 6.
- Player content such as subclasses/archetypes
- Weird S***: Give me your weird and wonderful ideas that don't conflict with the content types in the "do NOT pitch me" section.
ISSUE 28
Do NOT Pitch ME
- Monsters
- Fantastic Locations
- Magic Items
- Please Pitch Me
- Player content such as subclasses/archetypes
- Weird S***: Give me your weird and wonderful ideas that don't conflict with the content types in the "do NOT pitch me" section.
ISSUE 31
Do NOT Pitch ME
- Monsters
- Fantastic Locations
- Please Pitch Me
- Winter or Fey themed magic items in sets of at least 6.
- Winter of Fey themed player content such as subclasses/archetypes
- Weird S***: Give me your weird and wonderful ideas that don't conflict with the content types in the "do NOT pitch me" section.
OTHER CONTENT I'M LOOKING FOR
Shards of Istar: These are very specific high level magical items. They are made from shards of crystalized bone from a god in our setting of Istar and are legendary unique magic items. Pitches for the Shards of Istar must have an exciting and evocative name for the item, and the final article should include descriptions of the item, its stats (for 5e or Pathfinder 2e), details on its history and who has wielded it in the past, as well as some plot hooks or information on where the item might be located now. The lore and "story" of these items is as important, if not more so than the mechanical information. These articles will likely feature multiple writers and levels of revision to fit the content into our setting, as the Shards are key parts of the setting.
Weird S***: Give me your weird and wonderful ideas that don't conflict with the content types in the "do NOT pitch me" section. I want to hear about your most creative ideas and get excited by them!
Before pitching, please familiarize yourself with the rules for submission over on patreon, and check out the article index to make sure what you are pitching hasn't already been published.
The pitch deadline is Tuesday, July 11th 2023. After this time I will review all pitches and decide which ones will progress to the outline stage.
