Deadline: 9 July 2023
Narratively is collaborating with The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars to produce the next edition of Wilson Quarterly, an award-winning global journal of ideas, cultural commentary and news. Wilson Quarterly looks at how policy and politics affect the world, on a variety of levels. We are currently seeking pitches for a special summer/fall issue titled "Why Africa Matters." Please find more info below:
With the world’s youngest workforce, abundant natural resources, rising cultural influence, and on the precipice of having the globe’s largest trade area, Africa is increasingly consequential beyond its borders and ready to be met it on its own terms. Even so, much of the debate about how best to engage with the continent is centered on countering China’s and Russia’s growing influence, and mainstream media coverage focuses on conflict, poverty and other long-told stories that elicit pity from the West, and is far from the vibrant, contemporary continent that exists today.
With narrative storytelling and emphasizing African voices, we want to surprise and delight our readers with a portrait of the continent that doesn’t often make the mainstream Western media. This edition will focus on the five key themes that demonstrate just what makes today’s Africa both unique and consequential: Economic Opportunity; People; Technology; Cultural Influence; and Governance/Diplomacy. We welcome pitches that fall into those thematic areas.
Rate: $2,000 for 1,500-2,000 words
Pitch deadline: Sunday, July 9
