Bryan Roth, News Editor at Good Beer Hunting, is looking for pitches:
Our editorial team is preparing for a regular review of pitches. Looking for a home for your story? Have a fun or quirky idea you haven’t yet found the right place to try and publish?
Tips, insight, and how to send us an A+ pitch:
See our story archive to understand what kind of stories we tell, how we tell them, and—most important—the breadth/depth of reporting: https://goodbeerhunting.com/blog Or, take it from Jennifer Sahn (https://niemanstoryboard.org/stories/the-pitch-pacific-standards-executive-editor-shares-some-dos-and-donts/):
What are the biggest mistakes you see in pitches? Not understanding the magazine you're pitching and sending something inappropriate, like an academic paper. If you don't take time to research the outlet, why would you expect an editor to take time to read your pitch? It's a breakdown of the system. But the biggest mistake is just failing to be really compelling. If a pitch doesn't draw me in and isn't articulating a unique enough story or argument, it doesn't rise to the top. I'll often encourage people to write the beginning of the pitch as you would the beginning of the story. Give a sense of the character, scene, narrative tension and narrative voice, especially if you haven't worked with the editor before.
See our style guide for how we talk about different story sections to help you frame a pitch: https://goodbeerhunting.com/style-guide Your idea is best served with detail and when you can show our editors where and how it fits in one of our story sections.
Not to be ignored: Paid short-form writing + photojournalism features. B-rolls are great to contribute regularly. These are meant to be high-quality images that stop someone from scrolling. For photographers and writers who shoot alike. Examples: https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/b-roll-blog
We focus on grounded storytelling focused on people, place, and culture. We love: Stories centered on humanity We avoid: Pieces pitched about a *topic* We don't want: Info already readily available on the 1st page of a Google search.
