Over the past few years, Grist has run an award-winning, multi-month, newsroom-wide initiative we call the Extremes project, where we choose an extreme weather type and explore how these climate-fueled disasters are reshaping communities, economies, and ecosystems.
In 2021, we focused on wildfires. Last year, drought. This year, we are launching Record High, a series on extreme heat and its impact on how — and where — we live.
The onset of an El Nino cycle coupled with climate-fueled rising temperatures mean that the next few years will be scorching — a glimpse of the decades ahead: https://grist.org/science/el-nino-tipping-points-amazon-great-barrier-reef/
Already this year, record-breaking temps have spurred widespread blackouts, fueled drought and wildfires, and caused severe storms like tornadoes: https://grist.org/extreme-weather/storms-and-searing-heat-grip-mexico-and-southern-states/
And extreme heat will cost the United States $1 billion in health care costs this summer alone, with an estimated 235,000 ER visits and 56,000 hospital admissions: https://grist.org/extreme-heat/extreme-heat-will-cost-the-us-1-billion-in-health-care-costs-this-summer-alone/
Grist's Record High will include daily reporting, in-depth features, service journalism, and data analysis. We'll also be publishing a limited-run newsletter, launching next week, led by Zoya Teirstein, Jake Bittle and Siri Chilukuri. Click below to subscribe:
