Salt, Soil and Supper is back, bigger and accepting pitches! SSS has expanded beyond the newsletter and is now a section at Scalawag.
We are relaunching with a call for pitches for the inaugural SSS Almanac, our flagship quarterly issue.
Envisioned as a contemporary take on the classic farmer’s almanac, Scalawag’s Salt, Soil and Supper almanac seeks to collect the stories and practices that have “kept” the south in the face of antiBlack, settler colonial, fascist state violence and disaster for generations.
This includes narratives and creative contributions that emphasize the traditions, practices, festivities, and lenses of critique that have allowed Southerners to persevere in the face of hostile physical, political and cultural environments.
We are open to fiction, non-fiction, and poetry submissions, as well as multimedia short film, audio, digital art, multimedia and photo essays, and social media specific content.
Please submit all pitches via the official form here on the Scalawag site.
Rate depends on the type of submission—art, poetry, long or short form essay, multimedia etc. however, the majority of submissions will range from $500-1500.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Salt, Soil, & Supper helps those interested in the environment, agriculture, and foodways in the Gulf Coast who want wholistic conversation and analysis by creating an ongoing space where readers hear from both practitioners and policy-makers, and where voices that are often siloed in environmental and agricultural spaces can weigh in.
- Read through a selection of recent articles/stories on its website.
- Review the submission guidelines here.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a few lines highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
