Louise Ridley, Features Editor at Insider, is looking for pitches:
Feature writers! I look for pitches for *blockbuster* stories—big, gripping, narrative pieces with strong characters and good access. Something extraordinary that merits us spending deep editing time and brilliant art and fact-checking resources on. They can be from anywhere in the world, on any topic, and should reveal something people didn't know. They tend to be 2,000+ words and we pay $1+ per word.
In the words of my boss, Edith Honan: We want deeply-reported, character-driven features that break ground, help us make sense of the world, and are fun to read. They could be illuminating profiles, surprising deep-dives or exposing wrongdoing and the human impacts of policy.
Insider is a digital publication but our features read like magazine pieces, and we think of them like that: cover-worthy, something to draw you in. We reach millions of people and want stories that will appeal to a broad audience.
PITCHES SHOULD INCLUDE:
- Tentative headline/subhead - look at Insider's, we are direct and conversational
- What's new and valuable in your story?
- Who are the characters, what's your access?
- Your reporting plan
- Timeline/Proposed length
