We’ve been playing with the idea of “space.”

What does it mean to make space for someone? How do we interact with the spaces around us? Who’s allowed in public or private spaces? In these spaces – what is seen and unseen? Who has left a visible mark on our space, and who remains invisible? What makes a space private or public, urban or rural? What makes a space accessible? What are the power structures and institutions who determine these spaces? And who are the people creating their own, new spaces?

The list of spaces extends to our bodies, homes, maps, planets and micro-forms of arts. There’s a lot of places you can go - send us an email if there’s a pitch you’d like to discuss.

What is a pitch?

A pitch is a short outline of a piece you’d like to write. A pitch usually includes an indication of the style of the piece (personal essay; reported feature; review), some brief context of the subject in question, and why this is urgent or vital reading now.

What is a submission?

If you already have a draft ready, you're welcome to send this as a submission for us to consider. Please also include a short summary (like a pitch) in the body of your email.

What should I do before pitching?

If you haven’t already, familiarise yourself with our site. Read a few articles to get a feel for what The Pantograph Punch is about and what types of pieces we publish.

Some tips for good pitches?

Tell us whether you’d like to write a longform or shortform piece, or include a proposed word count. (We consider a shortform piece to be between 500-1500 words and longform between 1500-2500 words).

Keep your pitch concise – between 1-3 paragraphs. Make sure your idea is clear, and supported by examples, if needed.

If this subject has been written about elsewhere, let us know how your piece will offer a new perspective and why you think it will be of interest to readers.

Anything else?

Include a few sentences about yourself in your email and let us know if you’ve published elsewhere before. If you’re pitching the outline of an idea, it also helps to include a writing sample.

If you’ve sent your submission to other publications, just let us know if it’s accepted elsewhere. We don't accept submissions or pitches for pieces that have been published elsewhere online.

The editorial team at The Pantograph Punch work part-time, so we may not be able to read or respond to your pitch immediately. If you need to hear back by a certain date (for example, the piece is related to an event or exhibition) please let us know when you get in touch.

FEES

For our regular publishing our 2023 rates are around $350 for a shortform article and $600 for a longform article. These rates are subject to change: dependent on length, subject matter, the work involved and level of experience of the writers!

We take submissions from anybody, but we tend to publish work that represents communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
