John Timmer, Senior Science Editor at Ars Technica, is looking for pitches:
If there are freelancers there that are looking to get started with science journalism, I’d love to see them pitch me or just get in touch to talk about what might make good pitches for us. We’ve got a long history of working with new writers at Ars.
Rates vary based on article length, difficulty, etc., so can’t give a single rate. I handle everything from short news stories to 3000+ word features, so range covers about $1000. What I’ve got available in a given month also varies based on what else I’ve committed to. Total budget varies from year to year.
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that Ars Technica pays 20-45 cents per word. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.
