I came to Sentient as a journalist mostly covering the climate angle, and have been surprised to learn just how many readers are interested in what animals think and feel.

Our posts on animal intelligence drive the most traffic, hands down. Searches for things like "do fish feel pain" also drive traffic to our coverage, with specific queries like "do lobsters feel pain" surging during the summer and similar questions about turkeys in the fall.

Obviously people still eat these animals, so what this information means is complicated. But I also think it's extremely promising: our coverage of California's Prop 12 also performed well — in fact readers are still interested in what the law means AND when it will be enforced.

So, yes, we'd love to see more of these stories covered.

We are open for pitches. Rates start at $200 but we pay more for experienced journalists.
