Sadiya Ansari, Commissioning Editor (Africa and Asia) for Openly, is looking for pitches:
Call for pitches! I’ve recently started an exciting new role with Thomson Reuters Foundation as a commissioning editor (Africa and Asia) for Openly, which focuses on covering original LGBTQ+ stories from around the world.
Openly is expanding its Africa and Asia coverage and I'm looking to work with local freelancers in the following countries: Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lebanon, Tunisia, Indonesia and the Philippines.
We’re looking for news features, news-hooked explainers + op-eds. While we often feature stories like the impact of Turkey’s housing crisis on LGBTQ+ sex workers, or following the impact of Uganda's anti-LGBTQ law, we also love stories about bright spots and quirky local trends.
Examples of the kinds of stories we are looking for + word count guidance here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zJQj-9nA2zyYstMoPPSeZuywILHdLdezcY_YxgQ1k8M/edit?usp=sharing
And please reach out with questions + pitches: sadiya.ansari@thomsonreuters.com
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that Openly pays £300 to £450 per article. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.
