Writers wanted (Scotland, film, social justice) | £100 per article
Added 2023-10-05 16:04:39 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: TAKE ONE ACTION
Deadline: 2 November 2023
Take One Action is excited to be commissioning three writers-in-residence based in Scotland to mark the launch of our editorial platform, Echo: an initiative dedicated to writing that, like our programming, pushes boundaries and explores the intersection of film and social justice.
With Echo, Take One Action will expand interdisciplinarily into the field of journalism, cultural criticism, and commentary. Here, our unique perspective forges a vibrant, exploratory space to engage with the arts as embedded within an ecosystem of social change.
This initial commission will see three writers, of any experience level, each develop three pieces to be published on the platform. This will be over a period of time catered to each writer’s needs, with selected writers expected to attend an introductory meeting to discuss this either online or in person on the 13th of November, 2023.
We are seeking imaginative, playful, and critical interventions that freely explore the relationship of cinema to social justice: ideas for writing that flesh out how the spheres of film, activism, social movements, and community connection can transform each other. These pieces can be personal, experimental, research-led; we are keen to work with writers to develop form according to their interests.
Take One Action programmer and film journalist Xuanlin Tham (GQ, i-D, The Skinny) will work closely with each writer as an editor, providing one-to-one guidance and mentorship. We envision nurturing close and long-term relationships with writers, rather than one-off opportunities: providing the time and space for individual writers’ development, flexibly adapted to their goals and circumstances.
Writers will be paid £300 (£100 per piece), plus travel expenses and a bursary to attend workshop(s) as part of the scheme. As part of Take One Action’s ongoing commitment to centre the voices of marginalised or otherwise silenced communities, we will prioritise writers from backgrounds under-represented in spaces of the arts, journalism, and criticism.
After this initial scheme, we hope to open Echo up to pitches, and will welcome these participating writers to continue working with us.
Please apply by 23:59, Thursday 2nd November. We will contact applicants by Monday 6th November.

Please submit your application via this Google Form. For ease of reference, these are the questions on the form listed below, so you may copy and paste if you wish:
- Please introduce yourself: who you are, your interests, and any relevant experience you might wish to share. We are prioritising applications by writers from backgrounds under-represented in the arts, journalism, and criticism. Please tell us if this applies to you. [Up to 300 words]
- Please tell us (“pitch!”) about one or more ideas for a piece(s) that you’d like to write for Echo. Tell us why it interests you, and how it explores a relationship between cinema and justice (however you wish to interpret that!). [Up to 500 words]
- Please share a writing sample of at least 500 words. This can be anything, and does not have to have been published – we’d love to get a sense of your writing! If you do not have a writing sample, please tell us about a film of your choice and how it transforms the world in some way.
- What would be helpful for you to receive/take part in for the development of your writing practice? [Up to 200 words]
- Is there anything we could do to remove barriers to accessing this programme for you?
- Is there anything else you wish to share?
