Pitches wanted (art, finance, food) | 50+ cents per word

Here at Common Good, Sarah and I have got plenty of exciting things happening, and I'm hoping some of your work will be a part of it. Specifically, we're looking for a few things:
- Economists vs. finance gurus. I'm looking for a writer with particular familiarity with financial advice, especially the Christian variety and the likes of Dave Ramsey and Larry Burkett. If that's you, and if you're up for doing a bunch of interviews for a feature package, let me know.
- Fine art(ists). If you've been a reader since the beginning, you know that fine art has been a central interest for us. If you know of an artist making interesting work and you want to know why or how, let's look into it together.
- Food. From food production to the culinary arts. We'd like to profile a professional or two whose philosophy on food emphasizes an understanding of the created world, like Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms.
- Amateurs and DIY. What does it mean to do something for the love of it? How do you know when to do it yourself and when to leave it up to a professional?
- Medical humanities. What's compelling to us about the medical humanities is the way its disciplines both bridge usually separate areas (medicine and the arts) and highlight that real health is holistic. We particularly value the contributions of Marilyn Mcintyre. I'm interested in publishing an intelligent exploration of the question of, Why medical humanities?
Here’s a general guide to what we cover and the areas for which we're always taking pitches:
- Theology. We generally use “theology” in the broadest sense of the God- and church-directed parts of our lives. Pieces here could be about Scripture, the history of faith, or stories about churches.
- Vocation. This is where we talk about work. It’s not only about how you make money, but it includes that. We’re looking for essays and reported pieces about calling, the future of work, leadership, tech at work, productivity, stewardship, home life (think personal relationships, parenting, etc.).
- Economics. We do a little with formal economics and political economy. But mainly, the economics department is about where economic systems meet (or diverge from) virtue. We're always looking for reporting on the best examples economic thinking and practices. FYI, we promote a vision for all this that comports with these 12 principles of economic wisdom.
- Arts and culture. We take the creation mandate (Genesis 1:28, 2:15) to mean all kinds of creation — and all kinds of cultivation. We're open to discussing fine art, low art, books, film, podcasts. Whatever.
- Sports. Sports matters in our society, and it forms a common language for people across generational and political and geographical divides. Plus, just about all of us are involved in sports at some level, from coaching rec league to watching on the weekends to gym memberships. We want to publish around all of that.
Remember, we’re pretty informal when it comes to pitches. And while we’re open on form, we’re heavily inclined toward reported essays, stories, and other journalism, interviews, researched pieces. We almost certainly won't be able to use opinion or think pieces.
