Lydia Wilson, Culture Editor at New Lines Magazine, is looking for pitches:
Every Friday, New Lines Magazine publishes a essay on some overlooked or misunderstood part of history, and we are looking for more.
Faisal Al Yafai explained what we wanted in this essay, "The past, the present and beyond": https://newlinesmag.com/newsroom/were-launching-a-new-series-the-past-the-present-and-beyond/
There are many examples of fantastic history essays over the past year and more—just a few are as follows:
- Alex White tracked radio propaganda coming out of Cairo: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/radio-cairo-and-egypts-battle-for-east-africa/
- Some have included a more personal element, such as this one by Sara Tor, documenting Turkey's cut with its past when the language was reformed: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/how-turkey-replaced-the-ottoman-language/
- Or indeed mine, which combined reportage from an archaeological dig to tell the story of early Christianity in the Gulf—and how it co-existed with Islam for centuries: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/archaeology-gives-clues-on-monastic-life-in-the-uae/
- Others take a bigger picture approach—including this by Anthony Elghossain on the global force that was (is?) pepper: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/a-story-of-pepper-the-worlds-most-important-and-underappreciated-spice/
You can find all of them here: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/
And you can submit your own pitches—a few paragraphs, including a hook for the editors and readers, the argument, and why you're the person to write the article—to: submissions@newlinesmag.com
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that New Lines Magazine pays $500 to $1,000+ per article. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.
