Deadline: 1 January 2024
Jake Eaton, Managing Editor at Asterisk Magazine, is looking for pitches:
Asterisk Magazine (www.asteriskmag.com) is soliciting pitches for Issue 06: California. We're a print and digital journal of writing and clear thinking about things that matter, and we publish ideas from in and around effective altruism. Our issues are thematic (Food, AI, Measurement, Mistakes) and we publish a variety of writers, from academics to policy experts to freelancers. Our about page provides a good overview of our mission (https://asteriskmag.com/about), and interested writers should read a few articles to get a sense of our style.
For 06: California, we're looking for pitches about, in, and of the Golden State. Some examples:
- Does the California effect exist?
- Where are we at with earthquake prediction, and what does that mean for California?
- A history of the more than 200 attempts to break up California.
- What does climate change mean for CA's wine industry?
- New angles on California and housing, etc.
Rates: $1/word.
We don't have any particular qualifications, and we're always looking for new writers. Our main filter is a high level of rigor and analysis (please read previous stories to get a feel). Writers can be located anywhere. Send pitches to jake@asteriskmag.com with 2-3 links to previously published pieces. Other examples that showcase your thinking (Substack, white papers, etc.) are fine. Use [California Pitch] as your subject line.
We'll be accepting pitches through the new year.
