Ethan Warren, Editor in Chief of Broad Sound, is looking for pitches:

What: Broad Sound is a print-exclusive journal of arts and culture.

That’s it–that’s the description. Everything else is up to you. I (editor-in-chief Ethan Warren) am looking for pitches for essays of any length on any topic so long as they could be grouped under the term “arts and culture.”

The first edition of Broad Sound consisted of essays on:

• The oboe solo in Beethoven's Fifth
• Musical theater in The Simpsons
• Children of divorce in cinema
• Haruki Murakami's Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage
• Pulp
• The mechanic as artist
• Rothko's chapel
• And a poem

So the sky’s the limit in both topic and style. The essays in Volume One ranged from tongue-in-cheek pop culture analysis, to a brainy yet warmly first-person academic deep dive, to personal reflections on where art meets our hearts. If you can make it seem like a compelling fit for a journal looking for a broad range of sounds, I want to read it.

I use the first person because Broad Sound is largely a one-man operation. For better or worse, you’re pitching to Ethan Warren, and you’ll be edited by Ethan Warren, with fact-checks and copy-edits from Sydney Urbanek (so not totally one-man). Presuming you see this as a “for better” situation–we want to hear from you!

Compensation: $100 upon publication, plus an equal share of any proceeds after expenses (up-front payments, copy-editing, and art) are recouped

How to pitch: Feel free to send between one and five ideas. They can be specific or they can be vague–I’m happy to help develop an idea from the earliest stages. If you can give a sense of a projected word count, great; if not, that’s fine. Please don’t send completed pieces–it’s much more interesting to see something develop from nothing!
