Pitches wanted (travel) (worldwide) | up to $1 per word

COMPANY/PUBLICATION: ORI

Deadline: 15 January 2024

Now accepting pitches for issue 02!

Deadline: Rolling, but ending January 15 for Issue 02

Rates: $.50-$1/word for features. $200 for departments (subject to change)

Welcome Ori Issue 02! Ori is a travel magazine aiming to flip the script on the traditional travel space, prioritizing local contributors and creatives to tell the global stories that educate and inspire. Think more cultural exchange and less cultural extraction.

We are partnering with established storytellers from the regions we want to visit and reconstructing our world map from the inside out. Have a story about your hometown or even a place you once called home? We want to hear it! Bring us along for the ride.

Ori is a bit of a pivot from some travel journalism, but we hope it’s a way to grow roots around the world and tell more meaningful stories. We want to work with a wide array of creatives and explore the vibrance of travel and connection through their eyes and words.

Our first issue is testament to that. Want to know what we’re about? Check out the magazine and our Ori Creative Grant—a fund set up to fund local journalism projects. We hope that our mission and publication resonate on some level, and that you’ll consider working with us. Please consult our pitch protocol below, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

DEPARTMENTS (300-900 WORDS)

Street Sense: We want to zoom in on one street to tell the story of your city. We’re not talking Broadway in Manhattan, but Grand St. in Brooklyn, a street that might not steal the headlines, but is attached to the heart of your hometown. Think of this as a guide with a bit of history and unique culture built in. Check out an example from Issue 01, King’s Road in Hong Kong.

Their B&B: A lodging highlight for locally-owned lodges, hotels and B&Bs in beautiful places. We want to highlight the owners as much as the lodging itself, so backstory helps. I.E. Teahouse along the Khumbu Valley or Eco-lodge in the Amazon. Here’s an example from Issue 01.

Humor: Missed connections, lessons learned and all of the misadventure that makes us smile (after the fact) on our travels. Looking for voice/wit. Take us to the lighter side.

Essay: Take us with you as you navigate that long and winding road. This is a place to get personal about your home of places well beyond it. Here’s an Issue 01 example.

FEATURES (1,000-3,000 WORDS)

We are assigning a limited number of features this year, so when it comes to reported stories, give us a hook we can bite into. We are narrative heavy, but not necessarily first-person. We do essays, but teach us something about the place we’re visiting in these pages—introduce us to characters and experiences. We’re not seeking travel as our protagonist, but rather stories about places and people on the ground to inspire us to travel. For example, our first issue has a piece on the fight to save Mexico City’s taco truck street art. This is a food and art story sure, but it’s also a human one, attached to gentrification, culture and community. We want to find pretty places and amazing adventures, but let’s dive deeper. Travel journalism meets travel writing.

Also, our features are always very visual heavy. With each pitch, please include a rough visual plan. Who can shoot this piece? Have they already shot something similar in the past?

Is there room for illustration? These are all considerations that go into our decision-making, so the more visual the pitch, the better.

Ok, that’s a whole bunch of information thrown around at once, but the point is this: I’m so excited to make a magazine with you. I promise to respect your work, ideas, and creativity. We are answering pitches on a rolling basis, so please be patient with us as we go through pitches over the holidays. Now let’s have some fun and make something we’re all proud of.
