Al Bustan News Service is looking for an ambitious reporter to join our team for a Journalism Fellowship. The Journalism Fellow will produce outstanding reportage for our site, covering Arab-American and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) communities in the Greater Philadelphia area. RESPONSIBILITIES
We seek an individual with strong editorial judgment, a background in news, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and an ability to identify and pursue local news stories. This position requires an understanding of the journalism process and ethics, an understanding of deadlines, and the ability to work with a team. The Fellow will work remotely and report to the editor. The Fellowship spans 6 months from the hire date, with the possibility of continued work with Al Bustan News Service.
Responsibilities include:
- Report 2 news articles monthly.
- Monitor news and generate relevant story ideas that include a wide range of voices and perspectives.
- Report stories assigned by the News Editor.
- Collaborate with Al Bustan’s News Editor, other Journalism Fellows, staff, and leadership.
- Adhere to Al Bustan’s editorial standards..

QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 1 year of reporting experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Excellent news judgment
- Ability to write stories following AP guidelines
- Ability to work under deadline
- Ability to work collaboratively
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Applicants must have valid US work authorization
COMPENSATION
Fellows are paid $625 per article with a maximum compensation during the Fellowship of $7,500.
ELIGIBILITY
Fellowships are open to early-career journalists and digital media professionals, including print, broadcast, and online journalists based in the Greater Philadelphia area. Applicants must have a valid US work authorization and be available to work in Philadelphia for the duration of the Fellowship. Applicants must be willing to travel within the city in order to cover assigned stories. Applicants report to the Al-Bustan News Service editor and in collaboration with the organization’s staff. Applicants from all backgrounds – including BIPOC, people with disabilities and gender nonconforming people – are encouraged to apply.
