Pitches wanted (food/environmental justice) | $1,000 to $2,500 per piece

We are seeking an experienced food system journalist or organizer and thought leader to write a well-researched summary of the best food justice and food system environmental initiatives around the country. This piece should be written from the point of view that food apartheid continues to happen in America, land injustice has negatively impacted our food systems in urban areas, and systemic change is a necessity. It should objectively overview existing initiatives, offer detailed summaries of their work and outcomes (2-4 pages), and editorialize why those outcomes took place, what best practices are emerging, how those can potentially be applied in other areas, and other key learnings the writer extrapolates (1-2 pages). Page counts include images/data visualization graphics that will be provided by a third party. This is for a food system research report by a private foundation.

Pitches should include brief qualifications/proof of expertise (bullet points in the body of an email are fine), CV if easily ready (not required), relevant writing samples, and a detailed description of their proposed approach and final product. The budget is $1,000-$2,500 depending on how robust the pitch is and the qualifications and experience of the writer, as well as their existing influence in the field.

Pitches are due January 19, 2024 to joy@pattan.co and the selection will be made by the account team and finally approved by the client. A writer will be selected in late January after a quick call to discuss the client and project in more detail. The final product will be due in early March (30-day research and writing timeline to begin immediately following selection). Priority will go to journalists, scholars, organizers or food system stakeholders established or emerging as forward-thinking thought leaders within food and environmental justice spaces. Though we have only committed to one story, we may be open to two separate stories: one focused on food justice overall, and one specifically focused on environmental justice within the food system in urban areas or another niche topic.
