The Ohio River Way is hiring! We're looking for a freelance writer to assist us in developing travel itineraries that highlight our communities along the river. If you're interested in travel writing, outdoor adventure, and/or tourism, we're interested in hearing from you. Replies to this posting are due by March 27, 2024.

ABOUT US:

The Ohio River Way is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization pursuing an Ohio River Valley renowned for its vibrant communities, opportunities for exploration and recreation, and high quality of life. You can learn more at ohioriverway.org.

DELIVERABLE:

Up to 5 “weekend trip” itineraries, each including 2-4 communities within the geographic scope of the Ohio River Way from approximately Ironton, OH, to West Point, KY

• Itineraries will be professionally written, similar in style to the New York Times “36 Hours” series, including text (~1200-1500 words each), sourced and cited photographs (~8-10), and links to websites of specific destinations or businesses.
• Itineraries will strive to be engaging and enticing for a broad audience, highlighting the beauty, history, and culture of the Ohio River and adjacent communities.
• Itineraries will include at least one non-motorized recreational activity, such as walking, hiking, biking, or paddling, as well as cultural and historical attractions; itineraries assume access to a vehicle.

SCOPE:

Contractor will develop 5 “weekend trip” itineraries that cover 2-4 member communities each within the current geographic scope of the Ohio River Way from approximately Ironton, OH, to West Point, KY

Contractor will utilize their own knowledge and research, as well as conversations with local tourism bureaus and independent businesses, to develop trip itineraries. Draft itineraries shall be reviewed and vetted with local tourism bureaus and the Ohio River Way Tourism committee for feedback and input.

Contractor will coordinate with Ohio River Way to package itineraries (including associated photos, maps, links, etc.) in a manner that will allow efficient and professional publication to the Ohio River Way website by June 2024.

COMPENSATION:

$4,000-5,000 depending on level of experience and final scope.
