Joanna Chiu, China Editor at Rest of World, is looking for pitches:
Excited to return to my global reporting roots as Rest of World's China editor! I love this nonprofit publication's mission of covering the impact of technology beyond the West. Rest of World journalists have produced in-depth reporting from 100+ countries and counting, illuminating the complexity of human experiences with technology outside Silicon Valley.
Since my early days of reporting, I've been drawn to the inherent optimism of covering innovation. In this role, I'll be primarily working with two stellar journalists Viola Zhou and Caiwei Chen, but I'm also open to freelance pitches. Starting March 18, you can reach me joanna@restofworld.org.
CONFIDENTIAL NOTE: Reports indicate that "feature rate is US $1/word" for this opportunity. It is recommended that you discuss the rate(s) with the editor upon the acceptance of your pitch.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
- Learn more about the publication: Rest of World is an international nonprofit journalism organization. It documents what happens when technology, culture and the human experience collide, in places that are typically overlooked and underestimated. Rest of World believes the story about technology is as big as the world that’s using it, and that everyone — from those building technology to those using it — can benefit from a broader global perspective. More information here.
- Read through a selection of recent China-related stories/articles on its website.
- Review the submission guidelines here. Note that these are the publication's general guidelines to help you refine your pitch. You must still follow the editor's specific instructions above.
- Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
- Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
