APARTMENT THERAPY MENTAL HEALTH EDIT PACKAGE 2024
Your mental health has a huge effect on how (or if) you clean or organize your home. For Mental Health Awareness Month in May, we're telling stories about how anxiety, depression, OCD, and any other mental disorder influences cleaning, organizing, and decluttering — through personal stories, expert recommendations, resources, and more. Through these, we hope to make people feel seen, find solutions, and learn.
Want to share your personal story or would like to be assigned an expert-led piece? Tell us by filling out the form below with what you are interested in writing.
We are accepting pitches for this editorial package until March 6, 2024.
Please read the below prompts for some guidance on the types of storytelling we are looking for (however, feel free to send anything that relates to this topic that might not fit the below). Format your pitch by providing a working headline and no more than a paragraph describing what the story will be about and why it should be written.
- Personal essays of a mental health condition that's affected your homekeeping — cleaning, organizing, decluttering — and the tools that have helped you. For instance, 10 Ways I Keep My Home Clean When Dealing with Depression. (Some personal essays may need to include sources.)
- Personal essays centered around how life at home can also be impacted by a loved one, roommate, or partner’s mental health. (Past or present experiences: For instance, if your parent has a condition, like hoarding, how that affects how you live/operate today, or if your partner has OCD, how do you make living together work?) (Some personal essays may need to include sources.)
- Expert led, researched pieces that cover specific mental health conditions as it relates to cleaning, organizing, and decluttering. For instance, How “Body Doubling” Can Help You Get Chores Done More Efficiently.
- Tips, hacks, tools, or even a product that has helped you. For instance, I Tried an ADHD-Friendly Planner and I Don’t Know How I Lived Without One.
Mental disorders include but are not limited to: anxiety disorders (like OCD or hoarding), depression, bipolar disorders, PTSD, neurodevelopment disorders (like ADHD or ADD), and more. We understand that this is a very sensitive subject matter. If you or someone you know is dealing with any mental health issues and needs help, please reach out to National Alliance on Mental Illness at 800-950-6264 or The Hope Line. If you are in need of immediate help, dial 911 or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988.
If you have more than one pitch, please submit a new form for each pitch you have (please send no more than three), and if you have any questions, please reach out to stephanie.nguyen@apartmenttherapy.com.
If we have any questions, want to proceed with your pitch, or would like you to take on an assignment, you will hear from us by March 13, 2024, at the latest.
