The Edinburgh International Festival is looking for freelance writers from diverse backgrounds to help us harness our storytelling power.

Classical music and opera are woven into the fabric of the Edinburgh International Festival. Our 2024 programme platforms musical traditions and perspectives from around the world, from Osvaldo Golijov's La Pasión según San Marcos to the most popular French opera, Carmen.

The International Festival often commissions external writers for features, biographies and event copy that celebrate the performing arts. Ahead of August, we want to expand our connections with freelance writers who have specialist knowledge in classical music and/or opera for future commissions. The plan is to build long-term relationships with freelance writers so that you feel equipped and confident in using our tone of voice and in-house style.

 
RATES OF PAY

Writers are paid GBP 20 pence per word exclusive of VAT.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE

This opportunity is for writers who identify as being from a background currently underrepresented in classical music and opera. We consider these backgrounds to be: 

• Black, Asian and Global Majority

• LGBTQIA+

• Working class

• D/deaf, disabled or neurodivergent*

This opportunity is open to writers who are aged 18 or over.

HOW TO REGISTER YOUR INTEREST

Submit a short personal statement (max. 200 words) outlining your experience of writing about classical music or opera. 'Plus, share one example of your published writing on music (examples should be non-fiction).
