Deadline: 15 June 2024
Ori is a travel magazine aiming to flip the script on the traditional travel space, prioritizing local contributors and creatives to tell our global stories. Where we have built magazines on the “36 Hours In” model, our mission at Ori is to go deeper and to get the stories that help us learn about places, people the idiosyncrasies of culture that make us hungry to not only visit, but interact and share with new communities. Ori is more cultural exchange and less cultural extraction.
HOW CAN WE FIND AND TELL THESE STORIES?
We want to partner with established storytellers from the regions we want to visit, constructing our world map from the inside out. If you're a travel writer from Brooklyn, we will not send you to the Amalfi Coast to write a Top 10 what to do. But if you're from the Amalfi Coast and have a story about your hometown or even a place you once called home? We want to hear it! Bring us along for the ride.
We know we’re a bit of a pivot from some travel writing, but we hope it’s a way to grow roots around the world and tell more meaningful stories. We want to work with a wide array of creatives and explore the vibrance of travel and connection through their eyes and words.
In return, we’re hoping to make the road a little smoother. Our Ori Creative Grant will be awarded the best contributor chosen by our subscribers, and those extra funds will be yours to help with your next project—whether that’s with us or not. The most important thing is that we keep telling these stories, and Ori is committed to making that process a little easier.
We hope that our mission and publication resonates on some level, and that you’ll consider working with us. At the very least, we’d love to have you as part of our growing community moving forward. Please consult our pitch protocol below, and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

DEPARTMENTS
300 - 900 WORDS
Humor: Missed connections, lessons learned and all of the misadventure that makes us smile (after the fact) on our travels. Looking for voice and wit. Take us to the lighter side.
Essay: Take us with you as you navigate that long and winding road. This is a place to get personal about your home of places well beyond it.
Street Sense: We want to zoom in on one street to tell the story of your city. We’re not talking Broadway in Manhattan, but more Grand St. in Brooklyn, a street that might not steal the headlines, but is attached to the heart of your hometown. Think of this as a guide with a bit of history and unique culture built in. Where are you eating and gather sure, but also who has been running the best family dry cleaner for 40 years? Where can you find a domino game on a Saturday? What’s changing? Think of the street as your narrative thread, and let it tell the bigger story. (This will be organized as an infographic).
Their B&B: A lodging highlight for locally-owned lodges, hotels and B&Bs in beautiful places. We want to highlight the owners as much as the lodging itself, so backstory helps. I.E. Teahouse along the Khumbu Valley or Eco-lodge in the Amazon.
FEATURES
1000 - 3000 WORDS
We are assigning a limited number of features this year, so when it comes to these reported stories, give us a hook we can bite into. We are narrative heavy, but not necessarily first-person. We do essays, but teach us something about the place we’re visiting in these pages—introduce us to characters and experiences. We’re not seeking travel as our protagonist, but rather stories about places and people on the ground to inspire us to travel. For example, our first issue has a piece on the fight to save Mexico City’s taco truck street art. This is a food and art story sure, but it’s also a human one, attached to gentrification, culture and community. We want to find pretty places and amazing adventures, but let’s dive deeper. Travel journalism meets travel writing.
Our features are always very visual heavy. With each pitch, please include a rough visual plan. Who can shoot this piece? Have they already shot something similar in the past?
Is there room for illustration? These are all considerations that go into our decision-making, so the more visual the pitch, the better.
