Publishers Weekly, a forward-thinking media company that covers the international book publishing and bookselling industries, is looking for a correspondent to cover the religion publishing sector. Founded in 1872, PW is dedicated to delivering high-quality journalism and fostering engagement with our audience through a dynamic website, ten email newsletters, a weekly print magazine, and an extensive presence across various social media platforms.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a skilled correspondent to cover the religion publishing beat. You will research, assign, and write articles about religion publishing, including market trends, profiles, interviews, title round-ups, book deals, and more. The religion correspondent will collaborate with PW’s news, feature, and book reviews staff, and will be responsible for our twice-monthly Religion BookLine email newsletter as well as six packages in print per year.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cover the religion publishing market: You’ll cover market shifts, book trends, publishing deals, and the people making waves in the business. We cover books and publishers from all faith and spiritual traditions, fiction and nonfiction.
Contribute to news and feature sections: Collaborate with the news, feature, and book reviews teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of the religion publishing sector, identifying story ideas and contributing diverse perspectives.
Oversee a semi-monthly email newsletter: PW Religion Bookline is a must-read email newsletter for anyone involved in religion publishing. It features a mix of news, features, interviews, and reviews.
Attend industry events and conferences: Network with industry players, attend relevant events, and build relationships to stay informed about current trends and developments.
Maintain awareness of broader publishing trends: Understand the overall publishing landscape and how it intersects with the religion publishing market.
Identify and pitch story ideas: Seek out newsworthy information, identify story angles, and pitch compelling ideas.
Meet deadlines consistently: Adhere to deadlines and deliver high-quality work that meets PW's editorial standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong understanding of the publishing industry: Experience working in publishing or a related field, with an understanding of industry processes, players, and trends is a big plus.
Proven track record of writing engaging and informative articles: Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and well-researched articles with a strong grasp of grammar and style, identify relevant sources, and conduct insightful interviews.
Experience covering religion or spirituality: Knowledge of major religious traditions, current events, and issues in the religious landscape is a plus.
This correspondent position is paid a monthly stipend plus payment per article written or edited. It is not a full-time staff position. Any work travel costs will be included.
This position pays $500/month on a retainer, plus $.50 cents/word per writing assignment.
