Pitches wanted (food system) | $1,000 to $2,000 per article

Alexandra Vollman, Founder & Editorial Director of Anecdote, is looking for pitches: 

We are seeking an experienced food system journalist and thought leader to write a well-researched summary of the best food justice and food system environmental initiatives around the country, with a focus on those related to farming, agriculture and food security. This will be part of a larger feature (featuring multiple writers) examining similar initiatives across the country. This is for a food system research report by a private foundation that serves the Black, Indigenous and Latine populations, and as such, we are specifically seeking writers from these communities who can offer a unique perspective on the issue of food security and its impact on these populations.  

This piece should be written from the point of view that food apartheid continues to happen in America, land injustice has negatively impacted our food systems and systemic change is a necessity. It should objectively overview existing initiatives (3-5), offer detailed summaries of their work and outcomes (including quotes from interview sources), and examine why those outcomes took place, what best practices are emerging, and how those can potentially be applied in other areas.  

Pitches should include brief qualifications/proof of expertise (bullet points in the body of an email are fine), CV if easily ready (not required), relevant writing samples, and a detailed description of your proposed approach and final product, including specific initiatives/organizations you would highlight. The budget is $1,000-$2,000 depending on how robust the pitch is and the qualifications and experience of the writer, as well as their existing influence in the field. The selection will be made by the account team, with final approval by the client. A writer will be selected in early to mid-May and the final product due in early June.
