CALL FOR PITCHES

What are you feeling, right now?

Dry eyes darting across a screen, fingers tapping with satisfying clacks onto a keyboard. A velvety wave of milky afternoon coffee on your tongue. Energy that crackles from mind to body or fatigue that infuses from body into mind. What do you hear, see, smell, feel, taste, in this moment, reading this newsletter?

We are, fundamentally, feeling beings — “minded bodies”1. With these bodies, we experience pain and pleasure, labour and leisure, restriction and abundance, liberation and oppression. Our bodies — in their various shades, forms, and functions — influence how the world perceives, interprets, and interacts with us. We rely on our bodies to perceive and interpret that world in turn, as we move in our skin, hearts abeat, stomachs rumbling.

We can’t think about bodies without thinking about food. Food is what sustains our flesh, and the links between food and the body are biological and emotional. We come to know food through our bodies; in many ways, we get to know our bodies through food. Our bodies interpret what foods make us feel good, what tastes we can’t stand, and most of all, what nourishes us. They interact with food and its social underpinnings in ways that, perhaps, cannot be fully understood or predicted.

Our BODY issue will explore how food relates to our minded-bodies in all their diversity. We want to talk about the visceral, embodied processes of farming, cooking, and eating; cultural and societal expectations of food, bodies, and health; mind-body connections, and much more.

We’re interested in stories offering intersectional feminist perspectives on:

Note that this list is meant as an idea starter and is by no means exhaustive. Please feel free to pitch any other relevant ideas, or to interpret the theme of BODY more figuratively — we love a surprise! Just make sure your piece incorporates both the theme of BODY (in relation to food) as well as a gender dimension.

Stories can come in myriad forms and mediums: personal essay/memoir, long-form narrative, recipe, poetry, podcast, video. Let us know what format you’re planning to work with and the piece’s approximate length (words if written, minutes if audio).

Our full pitch guidelines are available here. We pay a flat rate of USD$130 per piece.

Pitches will close at midnight CET on Wednesday, June 12. Please send all pitches to pitch@feministfoodjournal.com; make sure the subject line highlights that it is a pitch for BODY.

If you know someone who might be interested in writing for us but didn’t receive this newsletter, please feel free to pass it on!
