Seeking a consultant with a background in communications, message development, and media relations to support a variety of writing needs for NDWA and Care in Action.
ABOUT NATIONAL DOMESTIC WORKERS ALLIANCE AND CARE IN ACTION
The National Domestic Workers Alliance (NDWA) is the leading national voice for dignity and fairness for domestic workers in the United States. NDWA works for the respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections of domestic and home care workers across the country. NDWA is winning improved working conditions while building a powerful movement rooted in the human rights, dignity and equality of domestic workers, home care workers, immigrant women and Black women.
NDWA was founded in 2007 by domestic workers and organizers from around the country. Our national alliance has grown from this founding group of 13 organizations to now more than 70 affiliate organizations and local chapters developed by NDWA. To date, the Alliance comprises more than 250,000 nannies, housekeepers, and home care workers in all 50 states.
Care in Action is a (501c4) nonprofit, nonpartisan group dedicated to fighting for dignity and fairness for the millions of domestic workers in the United States, most of whom are women. Founded in 2016, Care in Action is backed by tens of thousands of nannies, house cleaners, and care workers across the country. We provide the tools, training, and community working families need to make their voices heard, and organize and advocate for respect, recognition, and inclusion in labor protections.
SCOPE OF WORK
NDWA is seeking a consultant based anywhere in the United States with a background in writing, message development, and media relations. The consultant will work remotely alongside the Communications team to deliver a variety of messaging products targeting a breadth of audiences.
Information Consolidation: Launch a rapid discovery process to metabolize key goals, wins, and initiatives.
Message Development: Work with the Communications team to develop persuasive and informative messaging to amplify our initiatives and legislative wins.
Writing: Deliver messaging products ranging from (but not limited to) emails to formal reports to messaging briefs for various stakeholder audiences and strategic campaigns.
Press Material Production: Occasionally assist Media Relations Director with drafting of press releases, press advisories and op-eds.
Thought-Partnership: Establishing regular touch points with the NDWA and Care in Action teams to co-develop media strategies and tactics.
DELIVERABLES
The ideal candidate will proactively recommend and execute on deliverables. The NDWA and Care in Action Communications team will also direct the consultant to complete specific work products. Deliverables include but are not limited to:
Memos
Messaging documents with talking points
Op-eds on topics such as local care policies, relevant news/culture moments, or care work at large
DESIRED SKILLS/QUALITIES
Ability to develop, adapt and amplify a message for various audiences.
Experience with media relations and earned media for progressive social and political issues.
Familiarity with issues related to racial and gender justice, United States politics, and labor rights.
Excellent people relations skills with ability to build connections and work collaboratively.
Proven ability to learn quickly, work independently and meet multiple deadlines with keen attention to detail.
Ability to work and collaborate with multi-racial staff and as part of a high-performing team, in a fast-paced, experimental organization.
Alignment with NDWA’s vision and values that center domestic workers' knowledge and expertise, including a commitment to economic, race and gender justice.
Knowledge of the domestic worker sectors and/or personal connection to the domestic worker movement is a plus.
Strong preference for multilingual Spanish speakers.
