Ryan Wichelns, Founding Editor of Trails, is looking for pitches:
We are always open to pitches. But full disclosure, international stories are a bit harder to place with us.
We primarily focus on North American destinations. Articles that focus specifically or heavily on a destination should be focused within that region. Articles where the geography is really just the setting of a different story (profiles, adventure stories, etc.) have a little more flexibility with place, but North America is still the preference.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
Learn more about the publication: Trail Magazine focuses on backpacking and other human/naturally-powered means of sleeping outdoors: bike packing, canoe camping, even rafting or mountaineering in North America. It also features multi-day trips to backcountry and wilderness destinations. More information here.
Review the submission guidelines here.
Check out our collection of pitch excerpts on this page and find more sample pitches at The Open Notebook Database and at SuccessfulPitches.com.
Do not forget to end your pitch with (1) a short introduction about yourself; (2) a paragraph highlighting your writing experience, relevant credentials and publication credits; and (3) links to your strongest work or portfolio, and online profile.
