Deadline: 1 August 2024
How do you archive absence? What is the journalist’s role when the subject is missing? How do you make apparent that which has disappeared?
State-enforced extrajudicial disappearances, as well as the invisibilization of the killed, the buried, the detained, the exiled, and the refugee can all be categorized as disappearance. But so can archival absences, large-scale demolitions, and ecological disasters.
Our upcoming issue seeks to capture the many valences of “disappearance” itself; to undo the concept that at once evades us epistemologically and materially. We hope to hone in on “disappearance” as a tool for enacting terror, and the forces countering it through resistance.
We are accepting submissions for the Vertical, 750-2000 words, short-form opinion, analysis or reportage pieces, as well as 2000-4000 words, full-length Features and Essays. Pitches must have a degree of urgency, news-worthiness, or lack of coverage, to indicate importance.
Please keep your pitches short: a maximum of three short paragraphs. Send a maximum of two pitches at a time to vertical@saaganthology.com with “DISAPPEARANCE” in the subject line.
We are especially interested in spotlighting organizers, journalists, artists, and activists from Balochistan, Congo, Ecuador, Gilgit, Haiti, Hong Kong, Kashmir, Myanmar, Palestine, Philippines, Sudan, and Tigray. However, a compelling pitch regardless of location is welcome.

TO HELP YOU CRAFT YOUR PITCH:
Learn more about the publication: The Vertical is a column centering solidarity—an effort to include essential, specific stories from across the world, featuring voices that offer a deeper introduction to key issues impacting regions not limited to South Asia. Its aim is to publish and create space to share the work being done by marginalized communities, their voices, their struggle across different contexts in South Asia against oppression, marginalisation, active genocide and growing fascism to enable solidarities and make the movements stronger and visible in whichever way possible. The Vertical is rooted in the belief that to fight the growing inequities and systemic oppression and injustice, the movements across South Asia and the world have to be connected, the voices amplified through solidarities. More information here.
