Cara McKenna, Editor at IndigiNews, is looking for pitches:
IndigiNews is once again looking for pitches related to water as part of an ongoing series — first person, photo essays, investigations, news. Open to all but especially welcoming pitches from Indigenous writers (you don't need to be a journalist).
Rates vary but pay is competitive and travel is possible! This is part of our ongoing IJNR-funded series. Stories can be anywhere in "Canada" and into the "U.S." I'll link some past examples below and feel free to reach out for more info: stories@indiginews.com.
As part of this series Mike Graeme created this stunning photo essay from the Sinixt canoe journey, which we later had translated into n̓səl̓xčin̓: https://indiginews.com/features/sinixt-secwepemc-people-paddle-together-amid-contentious-treaty-news
We've also had a few great stories from Athena Bonneau, including this piece on a salmon return ceremony at at nʕaylintn: https://indiginews.com/news/sending-prayers-for-a-safe-return-five-day-ceremony-calls-salmon-home-to-syilx-waters
In December, we got to print this stunning memoir piece from Troy Sebastian about a trip to COP28: https://indiginews.com/first-person/from-the-ashes-of-my-fathers-house-a-memoir-from-cop28
[NOTE: As indicated in the pitch guide, IndigiNews pays freelancers "on a sliding scale, usually between $250 and $750, depending on a story’s length, quality of images, depth and estimated time for completion."]
