Pitches wanted (documentaries, production, distribution) | up to $1,000 per article

Deadline: 4 October 2024
Abby Sun, Editor at Documentary Magazine, is looking for pitches:
Wondering how to contribute to the Documentary magazine? Well, we now have publicly available pitch guidelines, a published rates table, and an FAQ. We also have some thoughts about what "documentary" means for the publication. Read on for some tips: https://documentary.org/magazine-editorial-vision
How long should your pitch be? 1–2 paragraphs is enough. We pay all contributors. Can you pitch again? Yes, of course. How can you make your pitch better? Well...
We are looking for two things: peg, and frame.
1. Peg—what makes the piece timely? A peg can be a release date, a preview before an event/awards, a critical themed essay about a current topic of interest, or even arguing that something is critically overlooked.
2. Frame. We rarely publish straight reviews of individual films, and most rejected pitches fall into this bucket. Accepted pitches typically include a specific angle or argument about a film, several films, or a maker.
This frame should either match our editorial vision or challenge it in novel ways. If you are new to us, it is helpful to include why you are particularly suited to write this piece.
We're also trying to keep this database of upcoming documentary releases updated. Check it out: https://airtable.com/app2pmC37z1yA3rne/shrc1jvZXlRlWgxb8
Many thanks to the summer magazine intern Arushi Khare for spearheading this project!
Deadline: There isn't a firm cut-off date, but we're usually complete on assignments 2 months before printing, which would make it the first week of October for the December issue.
