The Los Angeles Times is looking for a temporary assistant editor for its Lifestyle and West Coast Experiences teams. The successful candidate should have experience editing internal and freelance writers for clarity, structure and tone as well as writing stories and guides about things to do. They must be skilled at writing engaging headlines and email subject lines.
The editor will edit and write general lifestyle and experiences content, guides focusing on things to do in California, newsletters and Instagram content on a full-time basis for six months. They should expect to be editing most of the time with some opportunities to write. The editor will have to build freelance pieces in our content management system and should be comfortable communicating on Slack with various stakeholders, including art directors, writers and other editors. They may also have to make art and photo requests. This position is based in California but can be done remotely. The ideal candidate is based somewhere in California and has a pulse on what intrigues readers interested in California lifestyle and experiences.
REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of five years of editing experience
Excellent line-editing skills with a focus on accuracy and precision
Skilled at editing copy with a conversational tone, balancing the writer’s voice with clarity and sensitivity needs
Skilled at editing both beginner and advanced writers
Skilled at writing things-to-do content in a variety of formats
Ability to write engaging headlines and intriguing email subject lines
Knowledge of SEO best practices
Ability to use a content management system and problem solve technical issues
Ability to communicate effectively in a remote environment
Qualified candidates should submit a resume and cover letter explaining how they develop engaging digital headlines and come up with pitches about things-to-do content. They should also include samples of editing work/applicable clips to West Coast Experiences Editor Michelle Woo.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $45.35 - $60.61 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At The L.A.
