Pitches wanted (arts, urbanism, GTA) | ~15+ cents per word

COMPANY/PUBLICATION: SPACING

Deadline: 6 August 2024

We are looking for contributors and pitches for the fall issue. Please send pitch ideas to pitch@spacing.ca by August 6, 2024.

COVER SECTION: STATE OF THE ARTS

There’s been a lot of discussion about how the arts in Toronto are struggling, because of high rents, pandemic hangovers, and other causes. But what is actually happening? How are artists and creators in Toronto and the GTA finding creative ways to adjust to the evolving environment? How and where are they finding places to create and show their work? How are they changing the city even as the city changes them?

We’re interested in stories about public art, festivals and events, theatre, studios and galleries, film, artistic interventions in public spaces, technology and the arts, and so on (we already have a story about music venues). And we’re open to more speculative ideas, too (like, how about those empty downtown offices?).

Most of our cover section articles are 1,000 words, but we’re open to other formats, including shorter pieces and sidebars, and graphics and images.

FRONT OF MAGAZINE

We also want other pitches! In addition to this cover section, we are also looking for pitches for articles unrelated to the cover section theme. We’re looking for ideas that focus on the people, places, and ideas connected to life in the public realm of Toronto. These could be standard features (1,000 words), essays, or shorter formats like op-eds (750 words) and creative formats like hidden gems, lists, maps, Q&As, charticles, infrastructure fetishes, etc.

PITCH DEADLINE: August 6, 2024

Pay: $150 for 1,000 words, with more or less for longer or shorter features.

Please send your pitches to pitch@spacing.ca

CALL FOR BOOK REVIEWERS

Every print issue of Spacing includes a few reviews of books about Toronto and/or urban issues. We are looking for writers who would like to be available to be assigned books to review for the magazine.

Reviews are 300-500 words long. The pay is $75, and you get to keep the book too. In most cases, you need to be able to pick the book up from the Spacing store (at 401 Richmond St. W.) and be able to read the book and produce the review within a few weeks.

If you are interested, contact our acting review editor, Josh Sherman, at joshuaxsherman@gmail.com. Please explain briefly why you are interested and any relevant experience, include some writing samples, and note any particular areas of interest.
