Deadline: 30 September 2024
One of the roles of the City of Literature Office is to respond to the call outs looking for new writing which come from our sister Cities. These come in randomly and are as varied as they are exciting.
Here’s a snapshot of this year to June!
Threads was a physical and digital exhibition of multilingual writing and material from UNESCO Cities of Literature. The exhibition was in Manchester Central Library for four weeks and was the backdrop to a launch event for stakeholders of the IMLD programme in Manchester. Poetry or short prose was exhibited that reference textiles and fabrics and what they mean to the people, writers and industries of the Cities of Literature.
Byron & the Black Friar was commemorating the bicentenary of Lord Byron's death in Greece. Newstead Abbey the home of this vision poet, traveller and political figurehead, is holding a year-long programme of work as tribute to this, giving new perspectives on his life. Participating Cities of Literature commissioned an artist to produce an artwork of The Black Friar in response. This artwork is displayed in Byron's dressing room, the very place where he visited him—and form part of the bicentenary program.
Illustrating the Wor(l)d Between 8th March - 19th April 2024, the University of Plymouth in Devon, England hosted an exhibition of illustrations from the World Illustration Awards (https://theaoi.com/world-illustration-awards/). University of Plymouth faculty selected 1 image that was interpreted by writers from Exeter and other Cities of Literature. The writing was printed and displayed alongside the illustration during the exhibition. The University of Plymouth will also produce a small, printed pamphlet of the writing and paired image.
Poetry on the Move. Heidelberg is launching an international partnership called "Poetry on the Move". Each participating City of Literature will contribute one or two poems of poets from their City, which will be printed on postcards. The poets will either be residents of the City or have a deep connection. The poems will be published in public space in the original language, in German (and English) over several weeks in alternation, printed on postcards, distributed in bars, bookstores, libraries etc. all over the city and published online too.
Since 2020 the Office has commissioned 20 writers and/ or illustrators as a response to call outs!
As we are keen to make sure we don't exist in our own bubble, we are launching an open call out for writers (any genre) and illustrators. We commission a range of experience levels, so this is a call out open to everyone!
We can't say when (or if) we will have a call out which suits you, but we can say that we pay $400 for all commissions and we are excited to grow our pool of people to commission.
And yes, you do need to be a resident in Victoria.
(And just to be crystal clear we will never get a call out which will fly a writer to somewhere. These are all creative commissions only.)
