Deadline: 8 September 2024
We’re very excited to announce the start of a new storytelling series, centring long distance loss.
The inspiration behind the series came from a wish to highlight the way loss and migrant status can impact a person’s grief journey.
We're looking to work with UK-based storytellers with a history of migration to share their stories of losing a sibling or sibling-like relationship in their country of origin. We are looking for stories that highlight the way people process their grief when they're not in physical proximity to their lost one, rituals that they may have implemented in replacement of attending a funeral, joyful ways in which community has shown up at such a dark time, and any other stories that revolve around this experience. (At least) one slot is reserved for a Palestinian writer.
We're accepting personal stories and essays, but also writing that blends in poetry or autofiction, as well as narratives that bring in photography, videography and other forms of media. This’ll result in a 800 - 1000 word newsletter to be published on fragments between October and December.
We will work with you to shape your idea from proposal to publication on fragments on our Substack platform as well as promoting and sharing your newsletter on our Instagram page. We can offer a £200 fee; we are grateful to the Solidarity Economics Collective for providing the funding to make this series possible.
If you’d like to submit a pitch, please fill out this form.
Important dates:
11.59pm BST, 8 Sep: Deadline for submissions
15 Sep: Selection of ideas for publication -- we will notify everyone who has submitted about the status of their proposal by this date
If your idea is not selected on this occasion, please don't be discouraged! We are always thinking of how to share stories on fragments and will be in touch in the future with more opportunities.
Thanks so much for taking the time to engage with fragments. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at fragmentsofgrief@gmail.com.
