Now more than ever we need to resist how media manufactures consent for injustice across the world. Our small role in this is to re-open our mentorship scheme for under-represented, unpublished writers looking to gain journalism experience. This programme provides first-time writers with in-depth support from pitch to publication with their first piece of published writing, on the topic of their choice.

During the process you will not only be able to workshop your pitch, but also work closely with mentors from shado’s global network on your piece, and choose an artist from shado’s network to create imagery to be published with it on our site. Every writer at shado gets paid for their article. You will receive a fee of £100 on completion of your piece.

SHADO MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME

Applications are open for shado’s mentorship scheme, a programme specifically for under-represented* writers who have not had work published yet but are looking to gain experience in the journalism industry.

*including but not limited to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour), people with disabilities, people identifying within the spectrum of LGBTQI+, GRT (Gypsy, Romani and Traveller), refugees and people seeking asylum.

PROGRAMME DETAILS:

The mentorship programme will provide first-time writers with in-depth support from pitch to publication with their first piece of published writing, on the topic of their choice.

Duration: 8 weeks

Time expectations: 3-5 hours a week, flexible to mentees’ schedule

During the process you will:

• Meet your team of editors

• Workshop an original pitch

• Work with a specific mentor from shado’s global network, whose experience is specifically aligned with your content needs, to create an outline for your piece

• Write a first draft

• Work with shado editors on draft feedback

• Refine the structure and content of your piece

• Choose an artist from shado’s network to create imagery to go alongside your piece

• Have your piece published on the shado websiteEvery writer at shado gets paid for their article, and this mentorship programme is no different! After you’ve completed your piece, you’ll receive a commissioning fee of £100.

The programme will equip writers with the tools needed to begin their career, including resource provision and up-skilling opportunities on how/where to pitch as well as tailored mentoring on how to develop their unique voice and creative non-fiction abilities.
