Pitches wanted (spaces, landscapes, Toronto) | $150 per article
Added 2024-10-10 04:15:11 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: SPACING
Deadline: 20 October 2024
We are looking for contributors and pitches for the winter issue (issue 69). Please send pitch ideas to pitch@spacing.ca by October 20, 2024. Pitches should be in the text of the email, or attached as Word docs (not PDF or other formats).
COVER SECTION: Yonge Street: Yonge street is the central trunk of Toronto. The city has grown out from it, its streets radiating east and west from this line that divides the city into halves but also ties it all together. As it moves from the lakefront to the city’s northern border, Yonge evolves constantly, at each point reflecting the nature of its new environment, showcasing many of the different phases of our vast city. The street has not always been treated with the respect its central role deserves, sometimes being neglected and even despised, but at the moment it is undergoing significant evolution, reflecting changes in the city as a whole.
Given its central role in Toronto, we want to dedicate a cover section to Yonge Street, capturing its many different states. What is its role in the city? How does it reflect different parts of the city? Who uses it, and how do people treat it? What changes are happening, and what do they mean for the street and the metropolis? How has it evolved over its over two centuries of history? We’re open to all kinds of angles.
Most of our cover section articles are 1,000 words, but we’re open to other formats, including shorter pieces and sidebars, and graphics and images.
FRONT OF MAGAZINE: We also want other pitches! Our front of magazine looks at all aspects of Toronto’s public spaces and urban landscapes.
So we are also looking for pitches for articles unrelated to the cover section theme, ones that focus on the people, places, and ideas connected to life in the public realm of Toronto. These could be standard features (1,000 words), essays, or shorter formats like op-eds (750 words) and creative formats like hidden gems, lists, maps, Q&As, charticles, infrastructure fetishes, etc.
PITCH DEADLINE: October 20, 2024
Pay: $150 for 1,000-1,200 words, with more or less for longer or shorter features.
Please send your pitches to pitch@spacing.ca
