Remote Features Editor wanted | $4,000 to $5,000 per month (part-time)

Longreads is seeking an experienced and creative features editor to join our small team on a part-time basis (approx. 20 hours/week) and help shape our most ambitious longform storytelling. This will be a six-month contract, though there is potential to convert into a full-time staff role at the end of the contract period. The ideal candidate will have a passion for narrative nonfiction, and a keen eye for compelling stories that resonate with a broad and curious audience.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assign and edit in-depth features, particularly reported pieces in the 2,500-5,000 word range
Work closely with editors and freelance writers to develop story ideas, provide guidance, and ensure high-quality content
Maintain a diverse roster of established and emerging writers
Collaborate with freelance fact-checkers to ensure all articles adhere to Longreads’ editorial standards and style guidelines
Contribute to Longreads’ efforts curating the best longform writing on the rest of the web
Contribute to the overall editorial strategy and growth of Longreads
QUALIFICATIONS:
5+ years of experience in editing, with prior experience in longform narrative work
Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to structure compelling narratives
Experience in editing across various fields and subjects: arts, digital culture, food, nature, and more
Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with writers of varying experience levels
Keen eye for detail and commitment to factual accuracy and journalistic ethics
Ability to collaborate and communicate in real time and asynchronously with Longreads staff across various messaging channels (e.g., Slack, Zoom, etc.)
PREFERRED:
Familiarity with WordPress, or similar digital publishing platforms and content management systems
Familiarity with lightweight image-editing software like PicMonkey or Canva
Understanding of SEO best practices and social media trends
