Pitches wanted (literature, culture) | ~£150 per essay
Added 2024-12-11 20:12:55 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE LONDON MAGAZINE
Jamie Cameron, Managing Editor at The London Magazine, is looking for pitches:
The London Mag is looking for more essays that explore literature and its intersections with wider culture.
Don’t be afraid to match high culture with low, to be funny, iconoclastic, and have an authorial voice. Above all, please do not write in the tone of a PhD thesis.
For inspiration, here are some standout essays from our last call:
Joey Connolly's essay examines life’s overwhelming complexity and our attempts to navigate information overload. It highlights how poetry serves as a radical act of focused attention in a world increasingly defined by distraction. You should just read this because it is so good: https://thelondonmagazine.org/article/essay-syzygy-or-how-to-talk-to-your-dog-by-joey-connolly/
Kira McPherson’s essay examines the absence of speech marks in modern literature, exploring debates around the trend and questioning what is gained or lost through this approach. Includes examinations of Sally Rooney, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Kairos: https://thelondonmagazine.org/article/essay-when-speech-was-speech-by-kira-mcpherson/
Tommy Gilhooly's essay 'Dear Chris Kraus, Ovid, Saul Bellow...', written in the form of a letter itself, delves into the evolution of the epistolary form, tracing how letters—real and fictional—forge connections across time and textual realities: https://thelondonmagazine.org/article/essay-dear-chris-kraus-ovid-saul-bellow-by-tommy-gilhooly/
If I were to boldly claim The London Mag's essays have any definitive style, it’s something of the rigour, humour and readability you can find in those three.
