Are you passionate about education and skilled in telling impactful stories that inform and engage communities? Epicenter NYC and The Unmuted are seeking a dynamic Freelance/Contract Schools Contributor to cover education issues with a focus on utility stories and innovative engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting & Writing: Produce clear, compelling utility-driven stories on education topics that matter most to families, students, and educators.
Curating & Engaging: Build connections with the community, particularly with underrepresented voices, to source stories and foster engagement through social platforms and events.
Multilingual Reporting: Use your language skills, preferably in Spanish, to connect with diverse audiences and ensure inclusive coverage.
Video Content Creation: Comfortable capturing and producing video content to complement written stories and expand storytelling across mediums.
QUALIFICATIONS
Proven experience in journalism, particularly covering education or related issues.
Proficiency in Spanish or other languages is highly preferred.
A knack for writing utility stories that offer actionable insights and solutions.
Experience with or a willingness to learn video production and editing tools.
Strong understanding of audience engagement, including leveraging social media to connect with readers.

Founded in 2020, Epicenter-NYC is a community journalism multiplatform initiative that started as a newsletter to connect neighbors during the height of the pandemic. Epicenter is a mix of news, information and crowdsourced answers. As the world becomes increasingly digitally connected and divided, Epicenter engages, connects and informs people IRL and digitally through the power of culture and community. Epicenter represents diverse audiences because they ARE these audiences, they live in their neighborhoods and interact with or represent them.

SALARY RANGE
About $1,000/month depending on experience. The expected output is the equivalent of two reported or explanatory pieces per week (examples here and here) and accompanying short-form videos (example here); or an in-depth reported piece (see here for a broadcast example); or three aggregated or roundup/”take”/Q&A type stories (examples here and here) with accompanying videos.
This is a freelance hybrid position. Candidates should live in NYC and be comfortable engaging with communities across the city.
