I'm not sure I agree. I think this could also be understood through trying to maximize intra-gender communication instead of inter-gender communication. With men being problem-solvers, it helps them communicate more efficiently amongst themselves in that role. Whereas women would gain more by trying to elicit empathy from others, especially other women, which could expedite a transfer of resources in a time of need.
In a tribal group, I would think it would be less about the couple and more about the roles each gender provides to the tribe. Thus men and wouldn't be strong from working together as units, but in separate groups, just like different departments in an organization rather than as an interdisciplinary team.

If men and women weren't different, I wouldn't be straight. The genders are complementary. Our differences are a GOOD thing!
