Deadline: 13 January 2025
Siobhan O'Connor, Associate Director at The Writers' Union of Canada, is looking for a writer:
The Union is seeking your assistance to expand our Writers’ How-to series. Expressions of interest are due: January 13, 2025. Read on for more details.
AUTHOR & EDITOR
The Union is seeking a professional writer to research and write a “How-To” booklet on the Author & Editor relationship for authors. The booklet should, at a minimum, address:
What does an editor do (in addition to editing the author’s work: acquisitions, selling rights, promotional plans, copy for book jacket and ads, overseeing production, proofreading, selling subsidiary rights).
Importance and role of editing.
Kinds of editing (substantive, copy, etc.).
How is an editor assigned to an author? Do you have a choice? What if your editor leaves the publishing house?
Author’s obligations (meet deadlines, lengths, expectations, format, delivery method).
Editor’s obligations (meet deadlines, maintain communication with the author, champion the book).
Editor as a creative partner – what happens in the editing process, examples such as first person to third person, changing characters, moving things around, etc.
Authors working with editors at a publishing house – differences to expect between a small house and a larger house.
Differences based on the genre of the work (e.g., is there less editing with poetry?)
What if the editor/publisher brings the project to you (e.g., non-fiction project about an up-and-coming political issue).
Hiring an editor – when should you hire your own editor (e.g., improving a manuscript before submission to publisher/agent, when self-publishing). Finding the best editor for your work (editors.ca selection process).
Working with an editor you’ve hired.
Agreement for working with an editor including payment schedule.
Agents and editing (when does this work, when doesn’t this work, what to be wary of).
Tips for navigating a challenging relationship.
When there is no way forward (terminating an agreement by author or editor).
Definition of relevant terms – may be included separately or included throughout the booklet.
For the ease of reading, the booklet may contain bullets, summary tables (perhaps for listing of granting agencies), and highlight important points.
The booklet should contain quotations from authors about the editing process (both positive and negative experiences can provide valuable insight).
The booklet should be a minimum of 6,000 words. A thorough outline will be developed in consultation with the Union based on the project description above as noted in the Memorandum of Agreement. The fee for the project will be $4,500. The work is to be completed no later than April 30, 2025.
The successful candidate will:
Be a professional author with experience writing instructional materials.
Have experience working with an editor.
Have excellent research and writing skills.
Please send a cover letter expressing your interest in the project, as well as your related experience and a writing sample (no more than 20 pages), by email to: soconnor@writersunion.ca.
