The Union is seeking a professional writer to research and write a “How-To” booklet on the Author and Agent relationship for authors. The booklet should, at a minimum, address:
Role of the literary agent – what they do, what they don’t do.
When to seek an agent – pros, cons.
Challenges of finding an agent.
Canadian vs US or international-based agent.
Seeking an agent – query letter: what to include, what not to include, etc.
Different genres and agents.
Agent/Author contract – what should be included, what shouldn’t be included, commissions, expenses, what works are represented, payments and statements to authors, how long do they represent it for.
Agent’s obligations.
Author’s obligations.
Editing and agents – do agents provide editorial suggestions?
Communications.
Term and termination of the agreement.
After termination – ongoing obligations, is agent still entitled to fee, etc.
Definition of relevant terms – may be included separately or included throughout the booklet.
For the ease of reading, the booklet may contain bullets, summary tables (perhaps for listing of granting agencies), and highlight important points.
The booklet should contain quotations from authors who have been part of an agenting relationship (both positive and negative experiences can provide valuable insight).
The successful candidate can use the Union’s Author and Agent booklet as a starting point for the new booklet if desired.
The booklet should be a minimum of 6,000 words. A thorough outline will be developed in consultation with the Union based on the project description above as noted in the Memorandum of Agreement. The fee for the project will be $4,500. The work is to be completed no later than April 30, 2025.
The successful candidate will:
Be a professional author with experience writing instructional materials.
Have excellent research and writing skills.
Have experience with the agent relationship.
