Kate Mullan, Director of Content at Level, is looking for a writer:
Level is a nonprofit that creates and distributes printed educational content to people in prison. We strive to publish educational material that is as useful as a textbook and as readable and captivating as a magazine. We serve people who do not have access to the internet and our program is self-guided without instructors, so the content must be self-contained, accessible and engaging.
We are looking for a contract educational writer to create long form (~15,000 word), written educational content that serves the unique needs of adults learning independently while incarcerated. The educational writer will be paired with a subject matter expert or provided existing content structure to adapt. The primary responsibility of the writer will be to make a complex topic accessible, engaging and effectively communicated to people with no prior knowledge of the topic and with no access to supplementary instruction. The educational writer will work remotely using Google Docs and will coordinate with a subject matter expert and our internal project management team.
Writers with experience creating long form, written content are preferred, especially those with experience creating content for low income, low literacy adult readers. Please apply if you have interest in supporting incarcerated learners in their quest to absorb, digest, and retain information that they find interesting and useful.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Write long-form (~15,000 words), print-format educational content on topics like financial literacy, computer science, commercial driving, construction trades, entrepreneurship, and traditional academics. Prior knowledge of these topics is not required as you will be paired with a subject matter expert or existing content. Ability to explain a complex topic is key.
Create assessment questions.
Review content drafted by others and make suggestions regarding tone, clarity, and usefulness for the learner.
Coordinate with designers and illustrators.
Adhere to a style guide that keeps our voice and pedagogical style consistent.
Adhere to a production schedule with development deadlines.
REQUIRED CAPABILITIES
Write personably, clearly, and concisely about a variety of topics (plainlanguage.gov is a great reference for what we mean by clearly and concisely).
Quickly learn about a topic, skill, or concept from existing high quality sources materials and/or subject-matter experts.
Give honest and constructive feedback on other people's work.
Receive and act on feedback from learners, collaborators and other team members.
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
Writing about academic subjects for a lay/popular audience
Long-form journalism
Instructional design or educational content creation, especially working in long form, written format
Adult education focused on low income, low literacy populations
JOB TYPE
This is a remote, contract position. You will be responsible for paying self-employment taxes.
COMPENSATION
$4,500 project fee.
AVAILABILITY
We're looking for someone to be available 15 hours a week or more. As a contractor, we understand you may have other jobs and clients. This position is not appropriate for someone who is only available a few hours a week.
