Deadline: 31 January 2025
Tea Troutman, Editor at Scalawag, is looking for pitches:
New Orleans writers,
The Super Bowl is quickly approaching and we are seeking coverage of the event that contextualizes it in the legacy of previous Super Bowls and mega events in NOLA.
Submissions should emphasize the connection between mega event tourism and gentrification and displacement in NOLA, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Pieces can also place the event in the context of similar ones in the US & The South, such as the post-Katrina NOLA Super Bowl in 2013 (and any others the city may have hosted), the symbolism of the Saints' 2010 win...
The 2024 Sugar Bowl and "terror attack, Mardi Gras, Atlanta's 1996 Olympics and 2019 Super Bowl + upcoming FIFA World Cup (2026), the upcoming LA Olympics and from 1986, this year's Paris Olympics etc.
Pitches should explore the overlapping connections between events and issues of anti-immigration sentiment, climate catastrophe & disaster capitalism, homelessness criminalization, & the mass displacement of Black, Indigenous, Poor & other "undesirable folks" from city centers.
Please send all pitches to tea@scalawagmagazine.org
Priority is given to NOLA natives/current residents.
Submitting a draft with the pitch email is welcome and preferred. Current rates are $.40/word, 2000 word limit
Deadline January 31 to ensure publication by 2/9.
