Pitches wanted (technology, second life) | ~$1 per word
Added 2025-03-16 02:58:54 +0000 UTCCOMPANY/PUBLICATION: THE VERGE
Deadline: 16 March 2025
Maria Galperina, Senior Tech Editor at The Verge, is looking for pitches:
Project code name: “THE MODIFIERS” / “SECOND LIFE”
Pitch deadline: Sunday 3/16 EOD. First draft deadline: Monday 3/24 EOD.
What’s old is new again… but different. The Verge is putting together a special series about small businesses and creators who reinvent and repurpose existing objects and technologies into something new. More accessible. More entertaining. Beautiful. Strange. At an odd location. Made from extraordinary materials. Used for an entirely new purpose. We want to see how their work pays homage to history and the unique twist that makes it relevant today.
In general, we want to see complimentary narratives of technological craftsmanship – from laser cutting to coding – whether as a trend piece featuring multiple creations or a single-subject feature (if the work is compelling enough to stand on its own). Please note these should have a technology focus.
Here are some examples of what we’re looking for in terms of scope and tone (though not necessarily subject matter):

The stories will be part of a series similar to our Making It Work series. You can see it here and here.
These pieces should be reported. We'll want you to speak with your subjects and ideally other key voices in the space.
The rate is a flat project fee of $800, but will work out to roughly $1/word, aiming for 800 words. If you want to write something more complex, let me know in your email.
Pitch deadline is Sunday, 3/16 by EOD, and the deadline to file will be Monday 3/24. Email your pitch and a few of your clips to Marina Galperina (marina.galperina@voxmedia.com). Put “Modifiers Pitch” in the subject line.
