Deadline: 5 March 2025
Nour Abi-Nakhoul, Editor in Chief at Maisonneuve Magazine, is looking for pitches:
Despite the heaps of snow crowding the streets in much of this country, we are looking for pitches for our summer issue. Please send all pitches to nour[at]maisonneuve[dot]org by Wednesday, March 5. Some notes on what we're looking for:
Well-researched, narrative-driven stories that balance a sense of storytelling with thoughtful analysis; A strong point of view, argument or "so what" principle; Lyrical, literary scene-setting that draws the reader in.
The stories can be locally specific, but need to be connected to broader ideas that are interesting to a general audience. We typically work with Canadian writers, but are not opposed to others, as long as the stories are in some way relevant to a Canadian readership.
What we are not looking for: Writing about American politics; Essays that set two subjects against one another without making explicit connections; Humour; Personal essays without analysis or research; Profiles or Q&As; Academic writing; Service writing.
Most of our previous issues are free to read online; please have a browse to familiarize yourself with the type of writing we typically publish.
You can find guidelines on the specific sections of the magazine and more detail on what we look for here: maisonneuve.org/contribute/
We pay 0.15/word for our long-form writing. If you have any questions about pitching us, please feel free to reach out at nour[at]maisonneuve[dot]org. Otherwise, get your pitches in by Wednesday, March 5. Looking forward to reading them!
